League congratulates Catalan politicians for voting to ban bullfighting
The League is today congratulating politicians in the Catalan region of Spain for voting to ban bullfighting.
This historic judgement was passed through the Catalonian assembly by 68 to 55 votes in favour of a ban and makes Catalonia the second region in the country to put a stop to the cruelty of bullfighting. The Canary Islands being the first to do so back in 1991.
The Bill, which will come into force on 1st January 2012 sees the ‘sport’ finally consigned to the history books, and follows years of campaigning by a number of anti bullfighting organisations.
League Chief Executive, Douglas Batchelor said: “We are thrilled that Catalonia has voted to ban bullfighting and hope that this will influence other Spanish regions to follow suit. We look forward to working towards all remaining bullfighting regions putting ‘cruel’ sports firmly in the past as Catalonia has done”.
